A Scottish Loch Earn Wedding at The Clachan Hotel, Lochearnhead
Some weddings just feel completely connected to where they are happening — and this was one of them.
Loch Earn, mountains disappearing into the clouds, Scottish weather doing exactly what Scottish weather does, and a group of family and friends who had come together simply to have an incredible time.
This was a wonderfully personal, relaxed family wedding at The Clachan Hotel in Lochearnhead, with the ceremony taking place right at the edge of Loch Earn.
Nothing felt overly staged or formal. It was warm, fun and full of personality — exactly the kind of wedding I love to photograph.
Getting married on the shores of Loch Earn
The Clachan Hotel sits in Lochearnhead, on the western edge of Loch Earn, surrounded by some of the most beautiful Highland scenery.
The hotel describes itself as a place “where the mountains meet the water”, and that is genuinely what makes this location so special. Loch Earn is immediately outside, with mountains, woodland and little Highland villages surrounding you.
For a wedding photographer, it gives you so much without having to manufacture anything.
Water. Mountains. Changing light. Mist. Wind. Rain.
All the things that make Scotland look like Scotland.
The hotel itself has loch-view accommodation as well as garden rooms and options for families and larger groups, making it particularly lovely for weddings where everyone is travelling and spending proper time together rather than simply arriving for the ceremony and leaving again.
A ceremony at the edge of Loch Earn
The ceremony was held right beside the loch.
It was intimate, surrounded by their closest people and with that enormous Scottish landscape behind them.
And yes — there was rain.
But we weren't scared of it.
I actually think some of the most atmospheric photographs in Scotland happen when the weather isn't perfect. Clouds soften the mountains, the colours become deeper, the loch changes completely and suddenly everything has a little more movement.
Rather than waiting for the weather to become something else, we worked with what the day gave us.
That philosophy is a big part of how I photograph weddings.
Your wedding photographs shouldn't be dependent on perfect conditions. Scotland is unpredictable. Your dress might get a little wet. The wind might catch your veil. Your hair might move.
Sometimes those are exactly the photographs you remember.
Pre-wedding portraits around Lochearnhead
Before the wedding we also created a series of portraits in some of the beautiful locations surrounding Loch Earn.
This is one of my favourite things about photographing weddings in Perthshire and the Highlands. You can move a short distance and suddenly the landscape changes completely.
A quiet roadside, open hills, the edge of the water or a mountain disappearing into mist can become the setting for photographs that feel almost cinematic.
We kept these portraits relaxed and allowed the landscape to do much of the work.
There is no need to over-pose people when the surroundings already have so much character.
Movement, dancing & those beautifully blurry wedding photographs
And then there was the bride.
An absolute dream to photograph.
She danced, moved, laughed and completely embraced the camera — which gave us the perfect opportunity to play with movement.
We created some of those soft, intentionally blurred photographs that have become such a beautiful part of modern wedding photography. They feel less like a frozen second and more like a memory of what was happening.
A dress moving.
Someone turning.
Hands reaching.
A flash of laughter.
For me, the best use of this style isn't simply because blurry wedding photographs are trending. It works when the photograph actually has something to say.
Movement needs movement.
And this wedding had plenty of it.
A wedding that felt like them
What I loved most was the atmosphere.
It wasn't about creating a wedding that looked perfect for photographs. The photographs came from what was already happening — family together, people laughing, dancing, changing weather and a couple genuinely enjoying their day.
That is always what I am looking for.
I will guide when guidance is needed. I'll find beautiful light, take you somewhere incredible for portraits and notice the little details you spent months choosing.
But I also know when to leave things alone.
Some photographs need direction.
Others need you to forget that I am there.
The magic is knowing the difference.
The Clachan Hotel wedding photography
For couples dreaming of a relaxed Scottish wedding surrounded by mountains and water, The Clachan Hotel and Loch Earn are a beautiful combination.
The hotel sits directly on the shores of Loch Earn in Lochearnhead, within Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, with St Fillans, Highland villages, forest trails and mountain viewpoints all nearby.
It means your wedding photographs don't have to be confined to one small corner of a venue. The wider landscape can become part of the story too.
And if it rains?
Bring the umbrella.
We'll still make something beautiful.
Planning a wedding at Loch Earn?
I photograph weddings, intimate celebrations and elopements throughout Perthshire, Loch Earn, Lochearnhead and across Scotland, with an approach centred around feeling over perfection.
Natural moments, beautiful portraits, movement, atmosphere and enough guidance that you never have to wonder what you're supposed to be doing.
If you're planning your own wedding at The Clachan Hotel, somewhere around Loch Earn, or another wild little corner of Scotland, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
