Sam & Rachel’s Romantic Wedding at Megginch Castle, Perthshire
Sam and Rachel’s intimate wedding at Megginch Castle in Perthshire was relaxed, emotional, full of personality and accompanied by a little bit of proper Scottish weather.
I joined them for half-day wedding photography, capturing their ceremony and celebrations around this beautiful historic Perthshire setting.
An Intimate Wedding Ceremony at Megginch Castle
The ceremony took place inside the beautiful old chapel at Megginch Castle — one of my favourite parts of the venue.
The darker interior, historic character and dramatic light created such an atmospheric setting for photographs. It felt intimate and almost cinematic, but what I remember most wasn't simply how it looked. It was what happened inside.
Sam and Rachel created a ceremony that genuinely felt like theirs.
Their guests weren't simply watching from the pews. They became part of it. At one point, everyone in the chapel joined the couple in song.
Standing quietly with my camera and watching the whole room come together like that, I could feel myself getting emotional. I genuinely had to hold back a few happy tears.
That's one of the unexpected perks of photographing weddings. You arrive to document someone else's story and occasionally find yourself completely caught up in it too.
Scottish Wedding Traditions, Family and Bubbles
Their ceremony incorporated meaningful traditions including exchanging rings, drinking from the quaich, tying the knot and jumping the broom.
Rather than explaining the history of every tradition, I think what matters most is how personal they made the ceremony feel.
Children were very much part of the celebrations too, adding to the relaxed feeling of the day.
Instead of traditional confetti, Sam and Rachel chose bubbles.
Perfect for little hands — and even better when everyone gets involved.
These are often some of my favourite photographs from weddings: children running around, guests laughing and the couple right in the middle of everything rather than a wedding day built entirely around posing for the camera.
Wedding Photography in the Scottish Rain
And then there was the weather.
Rain doesn't have to stop beautiful wedding photographs in Scotland, and Sam and Rachel certainly weren't going to let it stop them.
We walked through the grounds of Megginch Castle between the showers, keeping the smiles going and embracing whatever the Scottish weather decided to give us.
The rain, historic architecture and lush Perthshire surroundings actually added another layer of atmosphere to their photographs.
Rather than waiting for everything to be perfect, we worked with the day exactly as it was.
Feeling over perfection.
For me, that's what documentary wedding photography is about.
The result was a gallery filled with movement, laughter, dramatic light and photographs that actually feel like the day itself.
Half-Day Wedding Photography at Megginch Castle
Sam and Rachel's wedding is also a beautiful example of how much of a story can be captured with half-day wedding photography.
You don't necessarily need photography from early morning until the final dance to have a meaningful record of your wedding.
For smaller and more intimate celebrations, carefully chosen hours can capture the ceremony, family, portraits, traditions and all of those little interactions happening in between.
Megginch Castle works beautifully for this kind of celebration, with historic interiors, an intimate chapel and beautiful grounds all within one setting.
For me, though, I'll always remember this wedding for something much simpler:
Two people who kept smiling through the rain. A chapel full of people singing together. Children chasing bubbles. And that little moment behind my camera when I realised I was trying very hard not to cry.
One of the perks of this job.
