Family Photography at Kinnoull Hill, Perth – Another Chapter of Their Story
There is something especially lovely about photographing a family more than once.
The first time, I get to know you. The next time, it feels different.
The children are a little older. Personalities have grown. The family dynamic has shifted in tiny ways you might not even notice day to day.
And I get to photograph another chapter.
This family had been in front of my camera before, so this session at Kinnoull Hill in Perth wasn’t really about introducing ourselves or worrying about how to pose.
It was simply about spending time together and letting the story happen.
Feeling Over Perfect
My favourite family photographs are rarely the ones where everyone is looking perfectly at the camera.
They’re the in-between ones.
Someone laughing just before the photograph.
A child climbing onto Mum or Dad.
Little hands reaching out.
Running ahead on the path.
Cuddles that turn into chaos.
That split second when everyone forgets I’m actually photographing them.
Those are usually the photographs that feel most like you.
And that’s always what I’m looking for.
Not perfection.
Connection. Movement. Personality. Feeling.
A Family Walk Through Kinnoull Hill
Kinnoull Hill was perfect for this session.
Surrounded by woodland, leaves and little paths to explore, there was no need to turn the afternoon into a formal photoshoot.
We walked. We talked. The children explored.
We stopped when the light looked beautiful and let everything else happen naturally around us.
Of course, I’ll always give a little guidance when it’s needed. I’ll find the beautiful light, bring everyone closer together or gently direct you into something that photographs well.
But then I want you to forget about me again.
Because the magic usually happens just after the pose.
Photographs That Feel Like Memories
This is why I love photographing families outdoors.
Children don’t need to stand perfectly still.
Parents don’t need to spend the whole session telling them to smile.
You can move, explore, cuddle, play and simply be together.
Your gallery then becomes more than a collection of family portraits.
It becomes a little piece of that season of your life.
The way your child fitted into your arms.
The way siblings made each other laugh.
The messy hair.
The muddy shoes.
The tiny expressions you see every day now but might struggle to remember exactly ten years from now.
That’s the storytelling part for me.
Returning to the Same Photographer
Being trusted by a family once is special.
Being asked to photograph them again means even more.
Over time, these sessions start creating their own visual family history — not perfectly matching photographs every year, but little chapters showing how life changed.
Different seasons. Different ages. The same connection.
And I think there’s something incredibly meaningful about that.
