A Colourful Autumn Wedding at The Tormaukin, Glendevon

Some weddings prove that autumn doesn't have to mean muted colours.

Anabel and Lewis chose The Tormaukin in Glendevon, Perthshire for a celebration that was warm, colourful and completely personal to them.

It was one of those early autumn days when Scotland decided to surprise us with sunshine. The light felt almost summery, while inside the historic inn, darker interiors, old-world character and beautiful florals gave the photographs an entirely different mood.

That contrast was one of my favourite things about photographing their day.

But what really made this wedding stand out wasn't a particular colour palette or wedding trend.

It was how much of them was in it.

A Wedding That Felt Personal

The weddings I remember most aren't necessarily the biggest or the most elaborate.

They're the ones where you can see the couple in the choices they've made.

Anabel had put so much thought into the details of their celebration, but nothing felt as though it had been added simply because a wedding was "supposed" to have it.

It felt fun, personal and full of character.

That's something I love seeing more couples embrace: taking inspiration from weddings they love, but leaving behind the parts that don't feel like them.

A beautiful wedding doesn't need to follow a formula.

The best ones usually don't.

Statement Wedding Florals Made for Autumn

The florals were impossible to ignore — in the best possible way.

Bright sunflowers, rich seasonal colours and delicate butterfly details brought so much personality into the venue.

Against the darker, traditional interiors of The Tormaukin, those colours absolutely came alive.

Statement florals can completely transform a smaller wedding venue without needing to fill every corner with decoration. A beautiful bouquet or carefully considered floral installation becomes part of the atmosphere of the day — and, naturally, part of the photographs too.

It's one of the reasons I love photographing details in context rather than treating them as separate objects.

The flowers, the room, the light and the people all belong to the same story.

Why The Tormaukin Works Beautifully for an Intimate Wedding

The Tormaukin is a historic Scottish country inn tucked into Glendevon, surrounded by Perthshire countryside.

It has the kind of character that's difficult to manufacture — old beams, atmospheric interiors, cosy spaces and beautiful countryside immediately outside.

For photography, that gives us options.

We can use the moodier interiors and window light for photographs that feel intimate and cinematic, then step outside into the landscape for something softer, brighter and more relaxed.

The venue now specialises in intimate and exclusive-use weddings, which suits couples who want their celebration to feel more like gathering everyone they love in one beautiful place than hosting a huge formal event.

And that's very much the feeling this wedding had.

Documentary Wedding Photography With an Editorial Touch

I don't believe couples should spend their wedding day performing for their photographer.

The hugs, reactions, children doing something unexpected, conversations between guests and the little moments nobody planned are often what give a wedding gallery its heart.

So much of my approach is simply watching.

Then, when we have a little time for the two of you, I'll offer enough guidance to make beautiful portraits without turning the day into a photoshoot.

It's a balance I love — documentary photographs of how the wedding genuinely felt, with a little editorial influence when the moment calls for it.

Natural doesn't have to mean completely unguided.

And editorial doesn't have to mean stiff.

There is room for both.

Autumn Weddings Don't Have to Be Beige

One thing I particularly loved about Anabel and Lewis's wedding was the colour.

Autumn weddings are often associated with rust, brown, burgundy and very muted styling — all beautiful, but certainly not the only option.

Sunflowers and brighter seasonal tones looked incredible here, especially against The Tormaukin's darker Scottish interiors.

If you're planning an autumn wedding, think less about what an "autumn wedding" is supposed to look like and more about what will complement your venue and feel like you.

Rich florals, unexpected colour, candlelight, texture, fruit, foliage or something completely different.

Trends can be wonderful for inspiration.

Personality will always photograph better.

An Intimate Perthshire Wedding Without the Rush

Smaller weddings have something I really appreciate as a photographer: space.

Space for conversations to actually finish.

Space for guests to settle into the day.

Space for a couple to disappear outside for photographs without feeling as though 150 people are waiting for them to return.

And space for me to notice the quieter things happening around them.

An intimate wedding doesn't have to feel like a reduced version of a larger one.

Done well, it can feel incredibly luxurious precisely because there is less rushing and more time to experience everything you've planned.

Anabel and Lewis's wedding had that feeling.

Beautiful surroundings, people they loved, incredible florals, sunshine Scotland hadn't necessarily promised us — and a celebration that felt entirely their own.
