What Does a Newborn Photoshoot Look Like at 7 Days Old?
At only seven days old and weighing 2.5 kg, baby Maya was still wonderfully curled up and sleepy when she arrived for her newborn photoshoot.
Those first days pass in such a blur. Everything feels new, from the tiny stretches and sleepy expressions to the way your baby fits so perfectly against your chest. A newborn session gives you a little space to slow down and preserve those details before they begin to change.
Maya’s session was kept soft, natural and beautifully simple, allowing all the attention to remain on her.
Is Seven Days Old a Good Time for Newborn Photos?
Seven days old is a lovely age for a newborn photoshoot.
During the earliest weeks, babies often still naturally curl their legs towards their bodies and settle comfortably into gentle sleeping positions. Every baby is different, of course, and the session always moves at their pace.
There is no pressure for your baby to sleep throughout the entire photoshoot. Awake expressions, little stretches, yawns and movements are all part of their story too. Maya gave us a beautiful mixture of peaceful sleeping photographs and one particularly lovely moment when she opened her eyes to look around.
A Soft and Timeless Newborn Session
For Maya’s portraits, we chose a simple palette of warm white, cream and muted green.
Her delicate lace outfit and small floral headbands added texture without distracting from her features. The neutral background helped preserve the light, timeless feel I want these photographs to retain many years from now.
Rather than using lots of elaborate props, I focused on Maya’s tiny fingers, soft newborn hair, curled legs and changing expressions. These are often the photographs that become the most meaningful as children grow.
What Happens During a Newborn Photoshoot?
Newborn sessions are deliberately unhurried.
There is time for feeding, settling, changing and cuddling whenever your baby needs it. I gently guide the session while watching how the baby naturally prefers to lie. The aim is not to force a long list of poses but to create a varied gallery while keeping your little one comfortable.
For Maya, we created:
Soft individual portraits on a neutral backdrop
Natural photographs in a cream lace outfit
Close-ups of her face and newborn details
Lightly styled portraits with delicate headbands
Wrapped images in her mum’s arms
Relaxed portraits with both parents
The finished gallery feels consistent and gentle while still giving the family plenty of variety.
Including Parents in Your Newborn Photographs
Parents sometimes feel uncertain about appearing in photographs so soon after their baby arrives. I completely understand that, but I always encourage you to be included in at least a few.
You do not need to dress formally or know how to pose. Simple neutral clothing works beautifully, and I will guide you into comfortable positions that keep the focus on your connection with your baby.
Maya looked incredibly small and peaceful in her parents’ arms. Those portraits show more than what she looked like at seven days old—they show how loved she already was.
One day, she will be able to look back and see how her mum held her, how her dad looked at her and how perfectly she fitted between them.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photoshoot?
It is best to enquire during pregnancy where possible. I can reserve availability around your due date and confirm the exact session once your baby arrives.
However, please do still get in touch if your baby has already been born. Older newborns can also be photographed beautifully, although they may be more alert and less interested in deeply curled or fully wrapped poses.
